In the midst of the lush Rijsterbos and the Ijselmeer(the biggest lake of the Netherlands) lies the motor home campsite Mirnserheide. Surrounded by beautiful scenery with many hiking, cycling and water sport opportunities. Moreover, Camping Mirnserheide is the perfect place for visiting (one of) the eleven cities of Friesland. The cities Sloten, Stavoren, Hindeloopen, and Workum are within a radius of 20 kilometres from the campsite. Even though Lemmer is not one of the eleven cities, it’s worth paying a visit. Lemmer, playing a major part in the water sports business, has a vivid atmosphere with many shops and restaurants.

On Route You we offer a couple of routes starting at our campsite. Of course, you can also choose your own route. Our campsite Mirnserheide is between cycling intersections 6 and 15.

Admire the smallest city of Friesland, Sloten. Enjoy watching boats and ships at Stavoren, get fish & chips in Hindeloopen, or have a cup of coffee or tea in Workum. Campsite Mirnserheide is the perfect location for doing all of this. Are you a fan of sailing or (kite)surfing? Located only 1 kilometre from our campsite is the perfect spot for kite surfing. Only 11 kilometres from the Mirnserheid is the cosy but vivid town Balk and watersport town Lemmer being 20 only kilometres way has lots of shops and restaurants.

Sloten

The smallest city in Friesland is Sloten. Here you can find culture, history and all of that with a homely atmosphere. Every Friday evening during peak season the city fires a cannon. On Saturday afternoonDe Kaai is open for exhibition.

Stavoren

Stavoren is one of the oldest cities in Friesland. In 2011 it celebrated their 950th anniversary of having city rights. This fisherman town is one with a unique history.

During the Middle Ages Stavoren played an important role in the graintrade. Because of the membership of the Hanze the Frisian skippers were indispensable for Holland and that’s how Stavoren came to be a prosperous port town. At the end of the Middle Ages there came an end to the prosperity of Stavoren. The legend of “Vrouwtje van Stavoren’ is from that time. In the 17th and 18th century better times were at hand because of shipping to faraway countries. Today tourism is one of the biggest sources of income.

The ferry Enkhuizen-Stavoren has been in service since the sixties. In peak season travelling on the MS Bep Glasius, this trip lasts about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Once every hour there’s a train that will take you to Hindeloopen, Sneek, and Leeuwarden.

During the summer holiday from Tuesday until Sunday you can book a a tour on a small open boat ‘De Simmermoarn’ (which means the summer morning) of about two hours along a part of the eleven cities.

New: the fish fountain, it is allowed to swim and play in the fountain.

Hindeloopen

With its small alleys, streets along the water, and old picturesque buildings Hindeloopen is the city to visit. It is one of the smaller cities and has its own unique character. Hindeloopen has its own language, art and paintings, and also have their own garb. In the museum of Hindeloopen all these things can be admired along with the history of the city. Their first Frisian Ice-Skating-Museum has the biggest collection of skates and sleds in the world. Also the entire history of the Ice-Skating-11-cities-tour can be found here.

Workum

Workum, just like Stavoren and Hindeloopen, lies at the IJselmeer. Workum profiles itself as Arts and Culture city. The annually art exhibition ‘’Kunst in Workum (read: Arts in Workum) is held in the first two weekends of May, but also from May until September all participants are open for exhibition every second Sunday of the month. Opening hours from 13:30 – 17:00. One of the most well-known participants of the Arts route is the Jopie Huisman museum. This museum is dedicated to the works and life of the Frisian Master Artist Jopie Huisman.

Lemmer

Lemmer, not being one of the 11 cities of Friesland, is a well visited seaside resort in summer. This place being at the Ijselmeer has a great beach. This attracts tourists from many areas such as other parts in the Netherlands as well as from Germany. Lemmer is one of the most important fisherman towns of the Netherlands. The whole year round many festivities are being held here. But also without a planned festivity Lemmer is worth the visit.

Het Woudagemaal is the biggest water pumping station put to work by steam. This station located at the edge of Lemmer has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1998. In the nearby visitor centre you can find information about the facilities of the steam pumping station and the water management in Friesland.

Water is an important element in Friesland. Besides all the existing water events another has been added: the 11fountains. In each of the 11 cities now stands a fountain, created by international top artists from 11 different countries.
